As we reported back in May, Disney has been in the works to purchase a second island in the Bahamas. Well, today they are one step closer. According to EyeWitness News Bahamas, Disney Cruise line has gotten the green light to move forward with their plans to purchase the 700-acre (est.) property.

Lighthouse Point is located at the southernmost point of South Eleuthera, which is located south of Disney’s current private island, Castaway Cay. Lighthouse Point is currently on the market and is described as being an ‘ideal setting for a grand vision’ with exceptional beachfront acreage, colorful coral reefs, and a breathtaking landscape. In a press statement issued by the Bahamas Cabinet, it states that ‘The National Economic Council considered the matter today, 19 October, and approved the proposal submitted by Disney Cruise Line Island Development Ltd.’ It also stated that meetings were held with the island locals, of which more than 60% ‘very much’ or ‘somewhat’ supported Disney’s proposal, and on a meeting held in October, ‘overwhelming support was expressed for the Disney Cruise Lines Development Ltd. proposal.’

The land known as Lighthouse Point is privately owned and has been on the market for a long period of time. The Disney Cruise Line Development Ltd. had to have a sales agreement with the land owner in order to purchase the property. The cost was not disclosed, but according to previous reports from the Bahamas Real Estate Association (BREA), the asking price was $20 million.

With three new ships in the works, Disney Cruise Line will need more space to spread out. Of course, it is going to take some time to get the property ready for ships and guests. Now we wait to see what ships will dock there!
