This past weekend I had the exciting job of covering GalaxyCon Richmond for TMSM! This is an all weekend event that takes place at the Richmond Convention Center and 2019 was the first year it took place. What exactly is GalaxyCon? It’s a comicon with so much more!

During GalaxyCon, you will see the normal comicon events, but they provide live entertainment like dances, costume contests, and wrestling events. They also have live Q & A sessions with popular TV, movie, voiceover, and comic book stars at no additional charge to attendees. In addition to all of that, there are a ton of vendors with everything from cosplay costumes & accessories, Harry Potter wands, comic books, books, art, toys, Pop vinyls, and food!

With 3 full pages of activities, it was difficult to pick what to do, so I highlighted the Disney people and panels as a start. When we arrived, it was a little overwhelming because there was SO much to do and look at. We spent most of Friday perusing the convention floor looking at all the wares and goodies! We sat through a panel called 20 Years Ago at Walt Disney World that reflected all of the rides and happenings at WDW back in the late 90’s. It was fun to look back and remember rides like Horizons and the Skyway, and characters and shows like Bear in the Big Blue House. The highlight of my day, however, has to be when Paige O’Hara noticed my Belle leggings, shook my hand, and said she needed to get a pair. I almost lost it! I should have gotten a picture but I think I was in shock!

The best panel of the weekend, for me, was the Beauty & The Beast Q & A with Paige O’Hara and Richard White, the voices of Belle & Gaston in the original animated movie. They spoke about what it was like to record for the movie, their experience on Broadway, and funny stories from behind the scenes. We learned that they were fans of the remake, did not want to be on the reproduction on Broadway, and love that the movie means so much to the fans.

We also sat in on a panel for Brent Spiner who played Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation. It was interesting to hear him speak about his role in the show, his audition and how they wanted to cast him as another character on the show. We attended a panel on Disney planning put on by the guys behind the Drunk on Disney podcast that was entertaining to say the least! We met some of the celebrities and of course took lots of pictures of the cosplayers!

Overall, I would say that GalaxyCon Richmond was a success! It was well organized and laid out which made it easy to navigate. I can’t wait to see what they bring next.
