Sam Worthington Says Avatar 4 completely Changes the Whole Franchise

Sam Worthington just gave Avatar fans a reason to get excited again, and it has nothing to do with box office numbers. Speaking with CBS Mornings, the actor revealed that he has already read the scripts for both Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, and that the fourth film is his personal favorite of the entire franchise so far. According to Worthington, the upcoming movie is set to shake up everything fans know about Pandora, saying it “completely changes the whole dynamic and the whole world.”

While Worthington didn’t spill exactly what that shift entails, the pieces we already know point to something massive. Avatar 4 picks up shortly after the events of Fire and Ash before jumping forward roughly eight years, which means Lo’ak, Kiri, and Tuk could be stepping into much bigger roles as the Sully kids grow up on screen. Kiri is already set to take over as the film’s narrator, continuing the trend of passing the torch to a new generation. Then there’s Spider, whose newfound ability to breathe Pandora’s toxic air at the end of Fire and Ash could become a massive problem if the RDA finds a way to study and replicate it during that time jump, potentially flipping the entire balance of power between humans and the Na’vi.

Of course, none of this matters if Avatar 4 doesn’t actually happen. Fire and Ash performed well, but its numbers came in softer than the first two films, which has reportedly pushed James Cameron to look at trimming the budget for the next chapters. The film is still technically scheduled for December 19, 2029, with Zoe Saldaña and Stephen Lang expected to return as Neytiri and Quaritch, but that date feels far from locked in at this point.

Hearing the lead actor call the fourth movie his favorite of the saga is a great sign for where this story is headed, even with all the uncertainty hanging over it. Pandora has never been short on surprises, and it sounds like the best might still be ahead. Are you ready for Avatar to head into a whole new era, or do you think Fire and Ash should have been the finale? Let us know in the comments.

Avatar 4, is still scheduled to release on December 19, 2029.
