Toy Story 5 is having a massive opening weekend, and the numbers are honestly staggering. The Pixar sequel is projected to bring in somewhere between $160 and $170 million domestically over its first three days in theaters, according to Deadline, which puts it at number one on the weekend chart. That total blows past the previous franchise record set by 2019’s Toy Story 4, which opened to $120.9 million, making this the biggest debut Woody, Buzz, and the gang have ever had.

The opening isn’t just a franchise best, it’s one of the biggest debuts in Pixar’s entire history. Toy Story 5 is landing at number two on Pixar’s all time opening weekend chart, trailing only Incredibles 2’s $182.7 million debut from 2018, and it’s already the best box office opening of 2026 so far, beating out The Super Mario Galaxy Movie’s $131.7 million start earlier this year. If Toy Story 5 hits the high end of its projected range, it could even top several of its own predecessors once you adjust their numbers for inflation, including the original 1995 Toy Story and Toy Story 4.

The reviews back up the hype too. Toy Story 5 carries a Certified Fresh 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a fantastic score even though it technically sits as the lowest rated entry in the mainline franchise. With a reported $250 million budget, the biggest of any Toy Story movie yet, the film likely only needs to cross about $625 million worldwide to break even, a number that should come easily if it follows the same trajectory as the rest of the franchise. That puts Toy Story 5 in a great position to become Pixar’s sixth billion dollar movie.

This kind of opening is exactly what Pixar needed after a string of uneven box office results in recent years. Toy Story has always been the studio’s most dependable franchise, and it looks like Lilypad, Bonnie, and the gang are proving that all over again right out of the gate.
