Walt Disney Imagineering Is Bringing AI Into Attraction Design, and Fans Are Divided

Walt Disney Imagineering is Now Using Ai to Help Design Park Attractions and Fans Are Divided

Walt Disney Imagineering just confirmed something that has fans split right down the middle. Adobe announced a new partnership with WDI’s Research and Development team, and Imagineers will soon be using Adobe’s Firefly Foundry tool as part of how they design and visualize future park attractions. The news first came out a few days ago, but it has exploded over the last 24 hours as fan outlets picked it up and the debate started spreading across Disney social media.

So what will Imagineering actually be doing with it? According to Adobe, the tool is built to power three different parts of the design process. The first is a sketch to image model that takes a rough hand drawn concept and turns it into a fully rendered piece of 2D concept art, letting designers explore more directions faster. The second is a custom image model trained specifically on Imagineering’s own assets, designed to generate franchise accurate artwork across properties like Frozen, Cars, Lilo & Stitch, Moana, and Mickey & Friends. The third takes 2D designs and converts them into 3D prototype models, which will help teams plan builds and coordinate with engineering before anything physical gets constructed.

What makes this version of AI a little different is how it was built. Firefly Foundry is trained only on Imagineering’s own licensed and proprietary design catalog rather than scraped from the open internet, which Adobe says protects Disney’s intellectual property. The timing is notable too, since this comes just months after Disney’s deal with OpenAI for the Sora video app fell apart when OpenAI shut it down. WDI’s Kyle Laughlin said the goal is letting technology and human creativity work together responsibly, helping bring Disney stories and characters to life in the parks faster once the tools are in place, while still hitting the emotional quality guests expect.

Not everyone is convinced that is how it will play out. Some fans are genuinely excited, pointing out that Imagineering has always adopted new tools and technology going back to Walt himself, and that faster concept work could mean more ambitious attractions down the road. Others are far more skeptical, worried this is the first real step toward AI creeping into the artistry that has always made Imagineering special, especially given that Disney is currently suing other AI companies over copyright infringement while building its own AI tools at the same time. It is a debate without an easy answer. Where do you land on AI becoming part of how your favorite future attractions get designed? Let us know in the comments.
