Smoking Refrigerator Caused Evacuation at Magic Kingdom’s Space Mountain

Walt Disney World’s Space Mountain came to a temporary close Monday due to a smoking refrigerator, which resulted in the evacuation of its guests.

As shared by Orlando Sentinel, per Tim Stromsnes, a communications director for the Reedy Creek Firefighters, it was reported that an employee made the call for firefighters after seeing smoke coming from the appliance located in the break room, prompting them to pull the fire alarm. However, after the first engine arrived on the scene and saw the smoke was coming from the fridge they unplugged the refrigerator and the fire department’s other units were canceled.

Reedy Creek spokeswoman Eryka Washington confirmed firefighters were called to Space Mountain but said there was no fire.

Firefighters from the Orange County Fire Rescue were called to provide mutual aid to an address just outside the Magic Kingdom’s Tomorrowland area around 3:30 p.m., records show. Agency spokesman David Diaz said Orange County’s assistance with the call was canceled.

Per the Walt Disney World My Disney Experience app, Space Mountain was closed until approximately 4:45 p.m. and had an 80-minute wait.

In total, the attraction was closed for only about an hour or so. In addition to the temporary closure of Space Mountain, the PeopleMover also had a shut down and was closed for approximately two hours. Firefighters from Orange County Fire Rescue were called to provide assistance to the Reedy Creek First Department but that call was cancelled before any assistance was actually provided.

At this time, it is not known why the refrigerator was smoking, if it has since been repaired, or if it is back in operation.

Evacuation from Space Mountain has been seen as an exciting experience for some guests given the fact that when the lights go on inside the ride you get to see the intricate ride track that makes up the attraction.
