Disney Pulls Back the Curtain on the Team Behind Cinderella Castles Stunning Paint Refresh

Disney Parks Blog just gave fans an incredible look behind the scenes of Cinderella Castle’s freshly completed paint refresh, and the scale of the project is honestly wild. We’re talking over 600 gallons of paint, seven boom lifts, and three full months of work to bring the Magic Kingdom icon its new shimmering color palette, one that was first teased at Destination D23 last year.

Pulling this off took serious coordination between Walt Disney Imagineering, the Facility Asset Management team, Disney Live Entertainment, Project Development, Operations, and PhotoPass. One standout name in the feature is Nathan, an Associate Project Manager with FAM who started his Disney career as an intern just a few years ago and ended up helping lead one of the most visible projects in Walt Disney World history. According to Nathan, getting the moat completely drained so crews could safely work inside it ranked among the trickiest parts of the entire job, and temporary dams had to go in before the boom lifts could even be lowered into place.

On the design side, the new look was built to bring Cinderella Castle back to its roots. Chris, Senior Creative Director with Walt Disney Imagineering, explained that the team pulled inspiration from the Castle’s original 1971 appearance, going with deep blue roofs, detailed stonework, and gold trim that the team described as “elegant shades that lean into the element of fantasy.” Since the painting happened entirely in guest view, the operations team even worked out a daily schedule to move the cranes out of sight by noon so visitors could still snap that perfect Main Street U.S.A. photo.

For Nathan, the project became something deeply personal, going from a guy who wasn’t even working for Disney five years ago to someone who can now say he helped manage the transformation of one of the most beloved buildings in the world.
