Disneyland’s classic Autopia attraction now has a firm deadline hanging over it. According to KTLA, Disneyland officials confirmed the resort reached an agreement with the California Air Resources Board requiring the gas powered ride vehicles to be retired by February 1, 2027, or the attraction will have to close in its current form. The good news for fans is that Disneyland is already deep into designing, engineering, and testing a fully electric replacement vehicle, with more details expected soon.
So how did we get here? The deadline traces back to a 2024 settlement after the California Air Resources Board issued Disneyland a violation notice over Autopia’s emissions compliance. It turned out the Honda built engines powering the ride were never properly certified, something attributed to an administrative oversight that was corrected without any environmental impact. Disneyland paid a $56,250 penalty as part of the settlement and agreed to a 30 month window to transition the attraction to electric power, landing the final cutoff at February 1, 2027.
Autopia is about as old school Disneyland as it gets. The ride has run on gas powered cars since it debuted alongside the park itself back in 1955, giving generations of kids their very first taste of driving. The switch to electric vehicles also fits into Disneyland Resort’s larger sustainability push, as the company has committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2030.
