Disney Legends

There are so many people behind Disney that helped to create the magic we hold so dear to our hearts. As you have seen in recent articles, Disney finds creative ways to pay tributes, like tombstones, crypts, and windows on Main Street, USA. Most of them are paying tribute to Disney Legends, but what is a Disney Legend?

The Disney Legend program is a hall of fame that recognizes those that made an extraordinary contribution that was integral contribution to the Walt Disney Company. When it was initially established in 1987, the award was given during a private ceremony each year. As of 2009, they are given at Disney’s D23 Expo that takes place biannually.

So, how are the recipients chosen? There is a committee that was originally appointed by Roy E. Disney, Walt’s nephew. Now, the committee is made up of Disney executives, historians, and a few select others. Each recipient is represented by a commemorative plaque that has their handprints and signature that is placed on display at the Disney Plaza in Burbank, California at the Walt Disney Studios. Honorees also get a Disney Golden Pass, which is a lifetime pass to all of the Disney parks.

In addition to the plaque and pass, each recipient receives an award that was created by Imagineer Andrea Favilli, an Italian Sculptor. There are three characteristics that make up this award and the contributions they made. The Spiral stands for imagination, the power of an idea. The Hand holds the gifts of skill, discipline and craftsmanship. The Wand and the Star represent the magic.

What an honor it would be to be included with this talented group of people. Who is your favorite Disney Legend?
