Walt Disney Animatronic Being Added to Carousel of Progress- Thoughts. It’s been a busy news day today! First, we reported updates coming to the new Walt Disney Studios Courtyard, then huge news about a complete overhaul of Carousel of Progress! While both are exciting, I’d like to dig deeper about the Carousel of Progress news.
Last year, the new audio-animatronic of Walt Disney debuted at Disneyland. While it had mixed reviews, the majority of park goers thought it was pretty incredible. We knew that Walt Disney World was getting something similar, and we know that Walt will be the opening scene in the updated Carousel of Progress.
You will see Walt in a scene inspired by the 1964 TV special Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair, where he first introduced Carousel of Progress and talked about how innovation could help build a better future. To me, it’s like a history lesson about Walt Disney right out of the gate. Walt was always dreaming and looking forward to the future of what could come and we will get a glimpse of that.
Imagineers are also recreating props and little details from the original special, including references to “it’s a small world,” the Tower of the Four Winds, and even a prototype Tiki bird. It sounds like a really emotional opening scene and a perfect way to kick off the attraction’s next chapter. Will I cry? Oh absolutely! Walt was gone before my time, and it’s like getting a little look at him right before our eyes. Respectfully done of course.
All new scenes are coming to this classic attraction, which to me goes back to how change can be hard for some Disney fans. Myself included. I felt so conflicted when I heard this news. There are memories attached to certain Disney attractions, various aspects that we love. The current Carousel of Progress has facets that are near and dear to my heart, that’s for sure. However… it really does need some updates. I had a knee jerk reaction when I first heard the news, but once I saw the concept art and heard more about what’s coming, I was ok with it. Walt himself said that we have to keep moving forward, which is fitting since he will open the new version. I do have questions though, one in particular. What about the current voices in Carousel of Progress? That’s a big one. We don’t know anything more than what was posted, but you can be sure I’ll be watching for updates.
