Marvel Studios is finally moving forward with a Nova movie, bringing one of the MCU‘s most requested cosmic heroes to the big screen after years of speculation.
According to Deadline, Loki creator Michael Waldron has been brought on to write the film, with an eye toward directing as well if the project gets the green light. Waldron is no stranger to the MCU, having written Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, served as showrunner on Loki, and co-written Avengers: Doomsday. Neither Waldron nor Marvel Studios have officially commented yet, but the news lines up with comments Kevin Feige made back in 2024, when he confirmed to ComicBook that a Nova project was in development, calling it “three or four years out.”
Why Nova Could Be a Great Fit for the MCU
Nova, also known as Richard Rider, has long been a fan-favorite character that Marvel has yet to bring to the screen, despite laying some groundwork for him already. Xandar and the Nova Corps were introduced back in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, and were later wiped out offscreen by Thanos during the events leading into Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. A multiversal version of the Corps also popped up in What If…?, when a variant of Nebula joined its ranks.
As a cosmic hero, Nova would give Marvel a way to expand its space-set stories beyond the Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Marvel, an area of the MCU that’s been fairly quiet in recent years. There’s also an interesting parallel between Nova and Star-Lord, since both are Earth-born heroes who end up called to a much bigger galactic purpose. That shared history could open the door for some fun crossover potential, especially with Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord reportedly expected to return to the MCU in some form down the line.
While plenty of the specifics are still unknown, a Nova movie gives Marvel Studios a chance to introduce a whole new set of villains and storylines that haven’t been touched on screen yet, opening up a corner of the cosmic Marvel universe that’s been mostly left on the shelf since Endgame.
