My Worlds Are Colliding: The Muppets Are Taking Over the Marvel Universe This September. Okay, I have to be honest with you all. There are very few things in this world that can make me stop what I’m doing and just geek out completely. The Muppets are one of them. Marvel Comics is another. So when I say my worlds are colliding in the best possible way, I mean it with my whole heart. Marvel has just announced THE MUPPETS TAKE THE MARVEL UNIVERSE #1, a one-shot comic hitting shelves on September 23, and I genuinely cannot wait.

This is not a drill. Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Rowlf, Gonzo, the Swedish Chef, and the rest of the gang are crossing over into the Marvel Universe for the very first time, and the creative team behind this thing is absolutely stacked. Eisner Award-winning writer Chip Zdarsky, who is a self-described Muppets super fan, is headlining the book alongside acclaimed artist Pete Woods. Additional stories come from Ashley Allen, MacKenzie Cadenhead, Kyle Starks, David Baldeon, Mike Henderson, Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Adam F. Goldberg, and more. When Marvel assembles a lineup like that for a one-shot, you know they are taking it seriously.
The timing is no coincidence either. This one-shot is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of The Muppet Show, and it follows last year’s hugely popular Muppets homage variant covers that honored the 70th anniversary of The Muppets overall. Marvel is also rolling out new Muppet variant covers across multiple titles throughout September, so the whole month is basically going to be a Muppets takeover of the comic book world. I am absolutely here for it.

Now let’s talk about what’s actually inside this book, because the story concepts are as wild and wonderful as you would hope. The main story by Zdarsky and Pete Woods features Rowlf the Dog getting kidnapped by the dimension-hopping television tyrant Mojo, who wants to use him to launch a new streaming service. Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Wolverine, Emma Frost, and a whole crew of Marvel heroes team up to save the day. I genuinely cannot think of a more perfect premise. In another story, Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker invite Bruce Banner and Hank Pym into Muppet Labs for an experiment involving Gamma Rays and Pym Particles, which is either brilliant or catastrophic, and probably both. The Swedish Chef steps up to save Doctor Strange’s wife Clea from a mystical virus in another tale. And in what might be my personal favorite concept, Pigs in Space crosses paths with Rocket Raccoon and Groot for a full-on intergalactic romp. These stories were written for people like me and I fully accept that.

Zdarsky had some fun things to say about the project too. He noted the responsibility that comes with handling two iconic properties, and shared how thrilled he was to write Miss Piggy, who he called one of the greatest icons of the last hundred years. He also casually mentioned he got to write Deadpool, which, of course he did. The quote about Pete Woods turning in stunning and joyous pages has me even more excited to see this book in person.

The cover art from Nick Bradshaw looks incredible, and there are also variant covers from Humberto Ramos, Ron Lim, and a special Muppet Treasure Island 30th anniversary cover from Matteo Lolli. Yes, Muppet Treasure Island turns 30 this year. We are all very old and it is fine.
THE MUPPETS TAKE THE MARVEL UNIVERSE #1 goes on sale September 23 at your local comic book shop, and a digital version will be available through the Marvel Unlimited app. If you are any kind of Muppets fan, any kind of Marvel fan, or especially both, this one is an easy preorder.
