In a celebration of fan creativity, Lucasfilm announced this week the release ofThe Empire Strikes Back Uncut — a crowd-sourced recreation of the Star Wars classic — and complete details for the Star Wars Fan Film Awards.

With more than 480 fan-made segments culled from over 1,500 submissions,The Empire Strikes Back Uncut features a stunning mash-up of styles and techniques, including live action, animation, and stop-motion. The project launched in 2013, with fans claiming 15-second scenes to reimagine as they saw fit — resulting in sequences created with everything from action figures to cardboard props to stunning visual effects. Helmed by Casey Pugh, who oversaw 2010’s Emmy-winning Star Wars Uncut, the new film stands as an affectionate tribute to The Empire Strikes Back and is a testament to the talent, imagination, and dedication of Star Wars fans. In the spirit of The Empire Strikes Back Uncut, Lucasfilm is also excited to fully announce the return of the Star Wars Fan Film Awards, which will accept submissions from October 9, 2014, to January 16, 2015. The best selections will screen in a special ceremony at the upcoming Star Wars Celebration event in Anaheim in April 2015. Originally launched in 2002, the Star Wars Fan Film Awards embraced the fan film genre, giving fans an official forum to express their love of Star Wars through film. Though briefly retired in 2012, the Star Wars Fan Film Awards are being relaunched this year, welcoming multiple genres and styles to be judged in several different categories — including Filmmaker Select, as chosen by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

“The Star Wars Fan Film Awards are a wonderful way for us to acknowledge the extraordinary talent and passion of our fans that have supported us throughout the years,” says Kennedy. “Since Star Wars has inspired so many to take up a camera and begin their own filmmaking careers, we’d like to share some of that inspiration with an audience and encourage those filmmakers to follow their bliss. I’m looking forward to witnessing the incredible creativity I know our fans are capable of!”

A set of two tickets to Star Wars Celebration 2015 in Anaheim will be awarded to the best films in each of seven categories, including Filmmaker Select, Best Animation, Best Non-Fiction, Spirit of Fandom, Best Comedy, Best Visual Effects, and Audience Choice.
