Tom Hanks Opens Up About Toy Story 6 and Has Some Real Concerns About What Comes Next

Toy Story 5 just hit theaters on June 19 and fans are already wondering if there’s more on the way, but Tom Hanks is putting some important conditions on any future trips to the toy box. In a candid interview with Entertainment Weekly following the film’s release, the legendary actor opened up about what it would take for a Toy Story 6 to actually be worth making, and what he fears could happen to Woody if the franchise pushes forward without him.

Hanks made it clear that he doesn’t want to see the series continue just for the sake of it. “If you’re gonna do another Toy Story, it better be worthwhile. It better be great. You better be examining some theme that is not just dragging it out because people like the title,” he told the outlet. He acknowledged the reality that this is a massive corporate franchise, but stood firm that without something genuinely fresh and meaningful to say, there’s simply no reason to keep going.

But the creative bar isn’t even the biggest thing on Hanks’ mind. The actor raised some pretty sobering thoughts about AI and what it could mean for Woody’s future. “Time is undefeated,” he said. “The question would be whether or not we could cobble together some version of me. Every word we have ever recorded in time in Toy Story is on digital media somewhere, so they could put together anything they would want.” Both Hanks and co-star Tim Allen reportedly found that prospect unsettling, calling it “a scary thought.”

As for whether Toy Story 6 actually happens, the signs are pointing toward yes eventually. Director Andrew Stanton has described Toy Story 5 as the second in a trilogy, with the “Bonnie era” mirroring the structure of the original Andy years, which suggests there’s still at least one more chapter planned. Toy Story 5 also ends without fully wrapping things up, leaving plenty of story threads to pull on. For now, fans have an incredible new film to enjoy, and the conversation about what comes next is only just getting started. Are you hoping for a Toy Story 6, or do you think the franchise should wrap things up with Bonnie’s story? Let us know in the comments!
