In October 2013, we celebrated the 90th anniversary of the Disney Company.  We all know that Disney is number 1 in a lot of things but do you know all the firsts that the Disney company has achieved?  Here is a list of 20 of them:

One Mans Dream

1.  The Disney studios were the first to create a storyboard for the action of a film with “Steamboat Willie” in 1928.

2.  The Disney company was the first to use three-strip technicolor in cartoons.  The Silly Symphony “Flowers and Trees” was the first and helped popularize this technique.

3.  Disney was the first to have a full length animated feature film with the 1937 release of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”.

4.  The first original motion picture soundtrack was released for “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”.

5.  In “Fantasia” from 1940, Disney was the first to use stereophonic sound developed and called “Fantasound”.

6.  Walt was the first Motion Picture studio producer to embrace the new medium of Television.  Most producers saw television as a threat to the movies, but Walt felt differently and created two television specials in 1950 and 1951, and started his own weekly show in 1954.

7.  Disney was the first to use the “Mini-Series” concept with programs like “Davy Crockett” and “The Swamp Fox”.

8.  When Walt had the vision for Disneyland, it was the first theme park developed for the entire family.

9.  In a first, Disney took the power of television and radio and combined the two for the first simulcast.

10.  When Disney introduced Audio-Animatronics in 1963 with Disneyland’s Enchanted Tiki Room, he was the first to use the three dimensional art on a regular basis.

11.  Walt took his motion picture company and was the first to release his films for the educational market.

12.  In 1982 when the Disney company rerecorded Fantasia, it became the first film recorded in digital sound.

13.  The very first full length computer generated animated feature was “Toy Story”.

14.  The first network broadcast in HD was when ABC’s Wonderful World of Disney showed the live action version of “101 Dalmations”.

15.  Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” was the first animated film ever nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

16.  The first film ever produced using digital technology was “Tarzan”.

17.  ABC and Disney Channel series were the first available for download on Apple’s iTunes Music Store.

18.  When “Chicken Little” was released, it was the first 3-D Digital cinema theatrical release.

19.  The first full length movie to be sold through a digital download was “High School Musical” when it became available in Apple’s iTunes Music Store.

20.  The first ever computer generated feature even nominated for best picture was “Up”.
