#3 “May The Force Be With You”
While this phrase was said throughout the films, it’s most often attributed to Obi-Wan Kenobi saying it to Luke. The truth is, Obi-Wan never told Luke what happened to his Father and never said the phrase either.
Obi-Wan’s references to the Force are:
- “The Force will be with you… always.”
- “Luke, the Force will be with you.”
- “Use the Force, Luke.”
- “Remember, the Force will be with you always.”
“May the Force be with you,” on the other hand, is first uttered by General Dodonna before the Death Star battle in A New Hope. Han Solo repeats it in the next scene, and it’s this moment — a suggestion of the bond with Luke that’s snuck up on Han, coming right on the heels of Han’s selfish refusal to help the Alliance — that made the line particularly memorable.
Many years later from a production point of view, Obi-Wan does finally say “may the Force be with you” to Anakin in both Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. Since people have been attributing the quote to him since 1977, thinking it came from Episode IV, it still counts as a famous misquote.
#2 “I’d rather kiss a Wookiee!”
While it’s always been attributed to Princess Leia and Han Solo bickering back and forth in The Empire Strikes Back, it actually wasn’t said that way. The scene goes like this:
Han Solo: Afraid I was gonna leave without giving you a goodbye kiss?
Princess Leia: I’d just as soon kiss a Wookiee.
Han Solo: I can arrange that. You could use a good kiss.
Often, Han’s final response is often misquoted as “He (Chewie) could use a good kiss!” but that is wrong also.
and the final one that is often misquoted is probably the most well known phrase in Star Wars Galaxy
#1 “Luke I’m Your Father”
What? I know that’s what happened. Luke was hanging on for his life after Vader just cut off his hand. Then Luke is crying and whining and talking about what Obi-Wan did tell him about his father, and how Vader killed Anakin and then Vader says’ the line “Luke I’m Your Father”.
That’s what a lot of people think happened, but the truth is:
Darth Vader: Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father.
Luke Skywalker: He told me enough! He told me you killed him!
Darth Vader: No. I am your father.
