For nearly three decades, ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex has been far more than just an athletic venue at Walt Disney World Resort. It has become a place where championship dreams are pursued, unforgettable sports moments are created, and athletes of all ages have the opportunity to compete on one of the most unique stages in the country. From Major League Baseball spring training and national cheer competitions to marathon weekends and international sporting events, the complex has continuously evolved while remaining rooted in Disney’s signature storytelling and guest experience. Now, with the arrival of the wildly popular Banana Ball phenomenon, another exciting chapter is about to be added to the long history of this Disney sports destination.

Since officially opening on March 28, 1997, ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex has grown into one of the premier multi-sport facilities in the United States. Spanning more than 260 acres at Walt Disney World Resort, the complex was originally developed as part of Disney’s ambitious sports expansion plans in the late 1990s and has since hosted countless amateur, collegiate, professional, and international sporting events.

Baseball played a major role in the complex’s opening day history. More than 10,000 fans packed the stadium to watch the Atlanta Braves face off against the Cincinnati Reds in an exhibition game that ended in a 9-7 Braves victory. That game also featured several memorable milestones, including former Braves star Fred McGriff hitting the stadium’s first-ever home run while multi-sport superstar Deion Sanders recorded the first hit, stolen base, and run in the venue’s history.

The connection between Disney and baseball only strengthened when the Atlanta Braves selected the complex as their official spring training home from 1998 through 2019. Over two decades, countless baseball fans visited the complex to watch some of the game’s biggest stars prepare for the upcoming MLB season. Players such as Freddie Freeman, Jason Heyward, Greg Maddux, Chipper Jones, Derek Jeter, and Albert Pujols all appeared on the Disney diamond over the years.

The venue also hosted opening round games for the inaugural World Baseball Classic in 2006, welcoming international teams from Australia, the Dominican Republic, Italy, and Venezuela.

Even after the Braves’ departure, the baseball legacy at ESPN Wide World of Sports continued evolving. In 2023, the Tampa Bay Rays temporarily utilized the facility during spring training, including hosting games against the New York Yankees and regular season series against the Texas Rangers.

Today, the complex’s stadium remains one of the most versatile baseball venues in Florida, featuring approximately 9,500 seats, luxury skyboxes, open-air viewing areas, and a massive LED video board stretching across the outfield.

Of course, ESPN Wide World of Sports has always been about much more than baseball. Over the years, the complex has hosted everything from youth soccer tournaments and AAU basketball championships to cheerleading competitions, football camps, volleyball tournaments, long-distance races, and special ESPN events. Its adaptability has allowed the venue to constantly reinvent itself while remaining a cornerstone of Disney’s sports entertainment presence.

Now, the next major evolution arrives with the debut of Banana Ball at Walt Disney World. The fast-paced, fan-focused baseball entertainment phenomenon has exploded in popularity nationwide, blending baseball with music, dancing, comedy, and audience interaction. Disney will soon welcome the Party Animals and the Loco Beach Coconuts to the complex, introducing a whole new generation of sports fans to the magic of ESPN Wide World of Sports.

The arrival of Banana Ball feels like a perfect fit for Disney’s sports complex — combining athletic competition with entertainment, storytelling, and family fun in a way that aligns perfectly with Disney’s long-standing philosophy of creating memorable experiences for guests of all ages.

From legendary baseball moments and international competitions to emerging sports entertainment experiences like Banana Ball, the complex remains one of the most dynamic and unique sports destinations in the country. And with Disney continuing to embrace new opportunities and audiences, it’s clear there are still many more innings left to play at this ever-evolving sporting paradise.
