“X-Men ’97” Season 2 lands on Disney+ today, and if Season 1 left you wanting more mutant history before diving back in, D23 has put together a reading list worth checking out. We’re rounding it up here, with our own take on why each pick matters.

Season 2 picks up with the team scattered across time, fighting to find their way home while new threats and a fresh wave of anti-mutant sentiment take hold of the 1990s. If you want some backstory (or just want to spend more time with these characters before the new season), here are six comics worth tracking down:
“X-Men” #1 (1991) throws Xavier’s team against Magneto in a classic showdown, featuring Jim Lee’s iconic gatefold cover art.

“X-Men ’97” #1 (2024) serves as the direct comic prelude to the animated series, created alongside the show’s writers, and fills in what the team was up to before the series picks back up.

“New X-Men” #114 (2001) kicks off Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s celebrated run, opening with the devastating destruction of Genosha and a new era for the team.

“X-Force” #1 (1991) introduces Cable’s black-ops mutant squad, with early appearances from Deadpool, Shatterstar, and Juggernaut.

“Rise of Apocalypse” #1 (1996) digs into the villain’s origin story as En Sabah Nur, long before he became one of the X-Men’s deadliest foes. And “The Adventures of Cyclops

“The Adventures of Cyclops and Jean Grey” #1 (1994) D23 Member Marvel U Promo sends the couple into the grim future of the Age of Apocalypse, where their children face a very different fate.

For anyone looking to catch up, D23 Members can currently snag a discounted month of Marvel Unlimited — Marvel’s digital comics library with more than 30,000 issues — for just $0.23 after a 7-day free trial, making now a pretty easy time to dive into any of these.

“X-Men ’97” Season 2 is streaming now on Disney+. Whether you go in cold or catch up on some mutant history first, it’s a great time to be an X-Men fan.
