A remarkable success story is unfolding at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, where a beloved resident has been given the gift of sight once again. Kendi, a 27-year-old white rhino who has lived at the park her entire life, recently underwent an extraordinarily rare cataract removal procedure that restored vision in her eye. The groundbreaking surgery, years in the making, showcased the incredible dedication, innovation, and teamwork that define Disney’s world-class animal care program.

How Kendi the White Rhino Found Her Sight Again at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

The Animal Care team at Disney’s Animal Kingdom knows its animals so well that even the slightest change never goes unnoticed. That attention to detail recently led to a life-changing medical breakthrough for Kendi, a 27-year-old white rhino who has called the park home since birth.

Animal keepers first noticed a subtle cloudiness developing in Kendi’s right eye. While the change appeared minor, veterinarians who regularly monitor her health recognized it as something that warranted further investigation. Through routine wellness exams and close observation, the team diagnosed Kendi with cataracts, a condition that causes the eye’s lens to become cloudy and can eventually lead to blindness.

For white rhinos, vision plays an important role alongside their powerful senses of smell and hearing. Maintaining healthy eyesight helps them navigate their surroundings, locate food, and interact comfortably with their environment.

Once the diagnosis was confirmed, Disney’s veterinary team began planning an ambitious and highly specialized procedure to restore Kendi’s sight.

Performing cataract surgery on a white rhino is exceptionally uncommon and presents challenges unlike those found in traditional veterinary medicine. The procedure required years of planning, collaboration, and innovation.

Dr. Betsy, a veterinarian with Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment team, helped oversee every aspect of the project.

“I’ve planned for this one procedure more than any other in my life,” said Dr. Betsy. “It’s been one of the most rewarding moments of my career. The level of innovation pushed us to think differently—and ultimately raised the bar for what’s possible in veterinary care.”

Preparation began years before surgery day. Animal care specialists worked patiently with Kendi to train her for voluntary eye drop treatments. Through trust-based husbandry techniques, she became comfortable receiving medication multiple times each day, ensuring she would be ready for both the procedure and the recovery process.

Disney partnered with specialists from the University of Florida, one of the company’s long-standing veterinary collaborators, to develop a surgical approach tailored specifically to a white rhino.

Dr. Caryn Plummer, an ophthalmologist from the University of Florida, helped design and perform the procedure.

“While cataract surgery is routine in humans, performing this type of procedure on an animal—especially one as large as a white rhino—presents extraordinary challenges,” said Dr. Plummer. “In Kendi’s case, the opportunity to restore her vision made every complexity worth navigating.”

Thanks to the combined expertise of Disney veterinarians and university specialists, the surgery was successfully completed.

An Unforgettable Recovery Effort

Although the operation was a success, Kendi’s recovery required just as much creativity and dedication.

In a unique collaboration, Disney’s costuming team spent nearly two years developing a custom-made protective eye mask designed specifically for Kendi. The specialized mask protected her healing eye while still allowing caregivers to administer critical post-surgery treatments.

“This was definitely outside the scope of what our team is usually asked to do,” said Tracy, a Disney costuming manager. “But nothing about this project was ordinary. We worked closely with the Animal Care teams to create a solution that supported Kendi’s comfort and recovery every step of the way.”

The custom eye protection became a perfect example of how departments across Disney can come together to solve extraordinary challenges. From veterinarians and animal keepers to designers and fabric specialists, countless Cast Members played a role in Kendi’s successful recovery.

Helping Rhinos Beyond Disney

Kendi’s story extends far beyond a single animal.

White rhinos are currently classified as near threatened in the wild, making every advancement in veterinary care valuable for conservation efforts worldwide. Disney plans to share the surgical techniques and lessons learned with the broader veterinary community, potentially helping rhinos and other large animals receive similar care in the future.

Kendi’s successful surgery is more than a veterinary milestone—it’s a testament to the extraordinary care and commitment behind the scenes at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. From years of preparation and specialized medical expertise to a custom-designed recovery plan, her journey demonstrates how innovation and compassion can transform an animal’s life. As Kendi continues thriving on the savanna, her story also offers hope for wildlife conservation efforts around the globe and highlights the impact that dedicated animal care professionals can have on protecting vulnerable species.
