****Before I dive into this article, let me say this may contain spoilers or contain information about things that may or may not happen in the new Disney+ show, WandaVision. These are my own opinions and what I took away from the show. You have been warned.****
On Friday, the much anticipated series Marvel’s WandaVision made its debut on Disney+. I won’t speak much about the show itself, but rather the commercial breaks in the episode. I do want to mention one part from the show which was a joke early on. There is a scene where Vision is walking into the kitchen and gets hit in the head with a plate and it breaks. Wanda makes the comment,“My husband and his indestructible head.” Is this a reference back to Avengers: Infinity War when Thanos ripped the mind stone from Vision’s head and essentially destroyed him?
If you have seen the show or the trailers, you know that WandaVision takes place in what appears to be television series of the past. The first two episodes have references to the Dick Van Dyke Show and Bewitched, and we know from the trailers this will continue with other shows of the past. I love that these episodes were all in black and white as it takes us back to a time in our history were television was very wholesome with it’s corny jokes.
As today, commercials were a huge part of the early television shows, but they had a different feel to them. During the first episode of WandaVision the commercial was for the Toast Mate 2000 by Stark Industries.
This commercial had the 1950’s feel to it and was sexist with the line, “Is your husband tired of you burning his toast?” The creator of the Toast Mate is none other than Stark Industries, run by Howard Stark at the time, and long before his son Tony Stark would come into the picture. I think the key here is the line, “Forget the Past, This Is Your Future.” Could this be a message directly pointed at Wanda to forget all the events she has been through up to this point in her life, because it doesn’t matter? Wanda has honestly suffered a lot of tragic things since coming into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There is no way at this point to know what this means, but in true Marvel fashion, it’s all connected somehow, someway.
In the second episode the commercial was for a Strucker watch.
Wanda and her brother Pietro Maximoff were introduced into the MCU in the after credits scene from the film Captain America: The Winter Soldier. We then see them again in the film, Avengers: Age of Ultron. At the beginning of the film, the Avengers are trying to get Loki’s scepter back which is being held at the HYDRA Research Base that is run by Baron Wolfgang von Strucker played by Thomas Kretschmann.
It was with the scepter, HYDRA had been conducting experiments on volunteers and Wanda and Pietro were the only survivors of those experiments. The watch is not only named after Strucker, but also had the HYDRA logo on the lower half. Could this be a message to Wanda about her past again and who gave her the powers she has? I wonder if the watch symbolism has something to do with time moving forward for Wanda. I guess only time will tell, see what I did there with the pun?
Also a quick note, it was the mind stone from Loki’s scepter that gave Wanda her powers but it’s also the stone that brought Vision to life and most likely what helps draw Wanda and Vision together.
While these first two episodes of WandaVision really don’t give us any clear answers about what is going on, we can only sit and wait for episode 3 to debut next Friday. I have a feeling the pace is going to start picking up as a lot of ground work has been laid. I’m very excited to see what the upcoming episodes show us. There has also been news of Wanda being in the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so I’m sure the series will be a lead up to that film which is due out March 25, 2022.
