Hurricane Irma Costs Disney Big Bucks

November 19, 2017

Back in September, as the entire state of Florida was bracing for Hurricane Irma, Disney made the decision to close the parks but kept their resorts opened for many who were fleeing their homes. Even with the resort revenue, Hurricane Irma cost Disney $100 million in operating income. From lower attendance, park closures, cancelled and shortened cruises, and damage/clean up from the storm, this is a big hit for the most popular theme park in the United States.

Even with the Hurricane Irma impact, Disney’s park division’s revenue grew in the 4th quarter, while the revenue and operating income in the media networks, consumer products, and studio entertainment division declined. Helping to make up for the losses from Irma were both the Shanghai and Paris theme parks, which increased revenues by 6% and operating income by 7%.
