Make Your Own Disney Colorful Watercolor Paintings by Guest Blogger Jen Metzger

Image 9I had seen beautiful watercolor painting for sale on several sites. I thought of ordering some. But one weekend I thought….surely I can create my own, so I experimented and sure enough it was super easy to do!

For this craft you will need:

  • Watercolor paper
  • Paint brushes
  • Water color paint (We used both cheap crayola watercolors and more expensive paints but both work great)
  • Scissors
  • Tape

Image 7This first thing you need to do is pick which character you want to paint and draw the outline OR print up a picture from online. I printed mine as low quality prints to save on ink since I am cutting it up anyway. Choosing images is about guess work some silhouettes work really well and some don’t read as well so just experiment until you find one the works for you.

Image 2Now you need to cut out the character it is important that you are careful on the outside edge not the character. I bought some small craft scissors and this helped cut in small spaces and detail areas.

After you have created your stencil you will tape down the outer part of of it to your watercolor paper. I wrap the tape around so it sticks on all sides and place it close to the edge of the character. (I also use the tape over and over to save tape and time.)

Once your paper is down you can paint. (For anyone not familiar with water color you will need a small cup of water. Dip your brush in water then the paint) This is were you get to be creative, colors can match the characters normal colors or be wild and random both look pretty!

Image 4After the character is colored you want to “speckle” or “spot” your art by putting color on your brush and flicking it or tapping it. If you “spot while the paint is wet the paint will create an interesting pattern and spread out it you don’t won’t the spread out effect skip this step of “spotting” until the art is dry.

Image 5Once the art is dry you can remove the outline paper and “spot” again around the characters. Now let spots dry and your painting is done!!!

Image 6I hope you have as much fun doing this as we did. My daughter Annaleigh is my lovely artist and helper in the pictures so remember not only is this a big kid craft but perfect for kiddos as well!!!!
