Spider-Man: Brand New Day is just weeks from release, and one of its biggest mysteries still hasn’t cracked: what role Sadie Sink is actually playing. Turns out the secrecy started at casting. Sink recently revealed she didn’t audition for the part at all, and didn’t even see a script until she landed in London to start filming.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton offered Sink the role directly, a decision that tracks given the two had already worked together on 2017’s The Glass Castle. From there, Marvel kept things locked down tight, holding the script until Sink physically arrived on set.
“I knew that Marvel was a big deal and had a big brand, especially Spider-Man,” Sink said. “I know there’s a huge fan base, but it feels really big. I think these blockbuster movies are a whole different beast.”
Stepping into a franchise this size wasn’t easy, but she credited Tom Holland with easing her in. “It was interesting stepping into that space and being a little bit of an outsider in that way, but he could not have been more welcoming, and just the whole crew in general,” she said. “He was just so relaxed and open, and I felt very at ease.”
As for keeping the role under wraps, Sink isn’t fazed — she spent years dodging Stranger Things spoilers as Max. “You just don’t share the secret, it’s not that hard,” she joked. Even Holland, notorious for accidentally leaking plot details, has stayed quiet on this one.
Fan theories about who Sink is playing range from Mary Jane Watson to Mayday Parker to Typhoid Mary to Jean Grey with the Jean Grey theory carrying extra weight, since it could mark Marvel’s first real step toward bringing the X-Men into the MCU.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day also stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo. The film opens in theaters July 31, with early Amazon screenings starting July 29.
