How the Sun Powers Disney Magic Around the World. Did you know that your next Disney day might actually be powered by the sun?

It’s true and it’s a pretty incredible part of how Disney is working to create a more sustainable future. This Earth Day, Disney Experiences is shining a light on the growing role renewable energy plays across its parks, resorts, and destinations around the globe.

Right now, Disney has built up more than a quarter of a million kilowatts of solar capacity worldwide. That’s enough energy to power the equivalent of a small city for an entire year. And in some cases, like at Walt Disney World Resort, the impact is even more impressive on sunny spring and summer days, solar energy can generate up to 100% of the resort’s daytime electricity needs.

So how does it all work? The answer varies depending on the location, but one thing stays the same the sun is helping fuel Disney magic all over the world.

Walt Disney World Resort (Florida)

At Walt Disney World, solar power is a major part of the energy mix. Across four different sites, the resort now has about 212,000 kilowatts of solar capacity, made up of more than 600,000 solar panels. That’s enough energy to power over 19,000 homes in Florida for a year.

One of the newest additions is a massive 74,500-kilowatt solar facility in Levy County, helping spread out energy production so everything doesn’t rely on a single location.

And of course, there’s the fan favorite solar “Hidden Mickey” near EPCOT a 5,000 kilowatt array shaped just like Mickey Mouse that’s become a fun symbol of Disney’s commitment to renewable energy.

Over on the West Coast, solar energy is also playing a role. At Disney California Adventure Park, the popular Radiator Springs Racers attraction is supported by more than 1,400 solar panels, generating around 400 kilowatts of power—roughly enough to supply nearly 100 Anaheim homes each year.

Disneyland Paris

Disneyland Paris is home to one of the most impressive solar projects in Europe—a massive parking lot canopy covered in more than 80,000 solar panels.

This system generates about 36,000 kilowatts of energy, enough to power a town of around 17,400 people. Plus, it gives guests a little extra shade and protection when they arrive at the parks—a win-win.

At Hong Kong Disneyland, solar panels are installed across rooftops throughout the park, making it the largest rooftop solar project in Hong Kong.

With over 7,500 panels and a total capacity of 2,860 kilowatts, the resort continues to expand its efforts including additional solar panels added to parking areas.

Shanghai Disney Resort

Shanghai Disney Resort blends solar technology right into its design, with panels installed on rooftops and even building facades.

Altogether, the resort has about 3,870 kilowatts of solar capacity, using around 2,000 panels to help power its operations.

Tokyo Disney Resort

In Japan, Tokyo Disney Resort uses solar panels across 10 different rooftop locations, generating more than 1,600 kilowatts of energy.

Disney Cruise Line Islands

Even Disney’s private island destinations are getting in on the action.

Castaway Cay Solar Farm

At Disney Castaway Cay and Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, nearly 12,000 solar panels help generate a significant portion of the electricity used on the islands. Together, these projects provide about 3,900 kilowatts of solar power.

From Florida to Paris to the middle of the ocean, solar energy is quietly helping power the magic behind the scenes.

It’s something most guests never think about while riding attractions, meeting characters, or watching fireworks, but it’s a big part of how Disney is working toward a more sustainable future.

So the next time you’re soaking in a Disney day, there’s a good chance a little bit of that magic is coming straight from the sunshine
