Universal Pictures is making a comeback with one of its favorite action-adventure franchises, and it looks like Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are in talks to reprise their roles for a new Mummy movie. This information we found through Deadline, who has several sources confirming, suggests they’ll be stepping back into their characters from the studio’s Mummy films from the ’90s and 2000s.

Representatives for Universal Pictures have not to provided any comments, and the specifics of the new film’s plot remain confidential. According to Deadling, we’ve learned that Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from Radio Silence will be directing, based on a script written by David Coggeshall (known for The Family Plan films and The Deliverance). Franchise veteran Sean Daniel will produce the film, working alongside William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein from Project X Entertainment.

The project brings together Radio Silence and Project X after their recent collaboration on rebooting the Scream franchise, which includes films up to next year’s Scream 7. While Radio Silence didn’t direct Scream 7, Project X was the producer. Recently, Project X worked with Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett on Ready or Not: Here I Come, a horror sequel for Searchlight Pictures.

In the past, Fraser and Weisz teamed up for two Mummy flicks: 1999’s The Mummy and 2001’s The Mummy Returns. Both films are inspired by one of Universal’s classic movie monsters from the early 20th century, directed by Stephen Sommers, and they each raked in over $400 million globally. The 1999 movie introduced Fraser as Rick O’Connell, a charming American adventurer and ex-French Foreign Legion soldier, while Weisz played Evelyn Carnahan, an English Egyptologist at the Cairo Museum of Antiquities. Throughout the two films, they evolve from being hesitant partners to a married couple with a little boy, facing off against ancient curses from the resurrected Egyptian high priest Imhotep. In the second film, Weisz’s Evelyn meets her end after realizing she’s the reincarnation of an Egyptian princess, but Rick ultimately brings her back to life.

Fraser became one of the biggest stars of the late ’90s and early 2000s, thanks in part to these Mummy films, which were so popular they led to famous attractions at Universal parks in Hollywood, Orlando, FL, and Singapore.

The franchise kept going with 2002’s spinoff The Scorpion King, featuring Dwayne Johnson, which made over $180 million worldwide. Then there was 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which raked in $403 million globally, with Fraser back in action but without Weisz, and directed by Rob Cohen.

Universal recently tried to breathe new life into the franchise with 2017’s The Mummy, featuring Tom Cruise, aiming to kick off a new series of monster films under the Dark Universe label. Although the movie did well at the box office, raking in $409 million globally, it received poor reviews, prompting Universal to abandon its larger Dark Universe ambitions.

Revisiting The Mummy franchise is a smart move for Universal, especially with the surge of millennial nostalgia for everything Fraser and his Mummy movies, specifically. This existing fanbase could really help, especially since the studio has struggled at the box office with its recent modern monster movie attempts like Abigail, directed by the Radio Silence team.

Weisz, who has also won an Oscar, is wrapping up projects like Prime Video’s Dead Ringers and Marvel’s Black Widow. She is represented by CAA, Independent Talent Group, Linden Entertainment, and Hirsch Wallerstein Hayum.

We can’t wait to see what Universal has planned for this new adventure! Whether it’s revisiting ancient tombs or awakening a new curse, one thing’s for sure — the combination of Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and a bit of nostalgic Mummy magic is bound to bring fans running back to theaters. Stay tuned to The Main Street Mouse for more updates as this exciting project unearths new details!
