Colman Domingo in Talks to Co write Live action Tiana MovieDisney’s New Orleans-set princess story may be getting a new live-action chapter. According to Deadline, Colman Domingo is in talks to co-write an original live-action film centered on Tiana from The Princess and the Frog, teaming up with Slave Play director Robert O’Hara on the project.

The Princess and the Frog, released in 2009, was one of Disney’s last hand-drawn animated features. Loosely based on E.D. Baker’s book The Frog Princess, the film follows Tiana, a hardworking waitress juggling two jobs to save up for her own restaurant, and Prince Naveen, who is turned into a frog by the voodoo witch doctor Dr. Facilier. After Tiana is accidentally turned into a frog herself, the two team up to find a way to become human again.

It is still early days for this new project, and few concrete details have been confirmed. Rather than a straightforward remake of the animated film, Domingo and O’Hara’s take is reportedly being developed as a spin-off, similar in approach to Disney’s in-development live-action Gaston project rather than a scene-for-scene retelling.

This adds Tiana to a growing list of Disney properties getting the live-action treatment, joining projects like Tangled and Lilo & Stitch 2, both currently in development. It also comes at an interesting moment for Disney’s live-action slate, with the studio’s most recent release, the live-action Moana, reportedly on track to lose more than $100 million following a rough opening weekend.

No director, cast, or release timeline has been announced yet for the Tiana project, but with two respected writers attached, fans will likely be watching closely for updates.
