BREAKING: Carousel of Progress Getting Major Walt Disney World Refresh. For more than six decades, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress has stood as one of the most beloved and meaningful attractions in Disney history. More than just a theme park ride, the attraction represents Walt Disney’s enduring optimism about the future, the evolution of technology, and the timeless importance of family.
Now, Disney is preparing to usher the iconic attraction into an exciting new era while honoring the rich legacy that has made Carousel of Progress such a treasured experience for generations of guests.

History of Carousel of Progress
The history of Carousel of Progress stretches all the way back to Walt Disney’s early dreams for Disneyland expansion in the 1950s. Originally envisioned as part of an unbuilt area called Edison Square, the concept centered around a show exploring how electricity and innovation transformed everyday American life. That original idea eventually evolved into the groundbreaking Carousel of Progress attraction created for the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair.

The attraction quickly became a massive success thanks to its revolutionary rotating theater system, catchy Sherman Brothers theme song “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow,” and Walt Disney’s personal creative involvement. The show celebrated the constant march of progress while reminding audiences that family and optimism remain timeless values.
From World’s Fair to Disneyland to Walt Disney World
Following the World’s Fair, Carousel of Progress moved to Disneyland before eventually making its permanent home at Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in 1975. Over the decades, the attraction continued evolving with updated scripts, new voice actors, refreshed scenes, and even alternate theme songs. Disney says that spirit of change has always been central to the attraction itself.

Now, Imagineers are preparing another major transformation for the classic attraction — one that both honors Walt’s original vision and introduces the show to a whole new generation of fans.
Walt Disney Animatronic Being Added to the Carousel of Progress
One of the most exciting additions coming to the updated attraction is the inclusion of Walt Disney himself through Audio-Animatronics technology. Guests will soon encounter Walt in a scene inspired by the 1964 television special Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair, where he first introduced Carousel of Progress to audiences and shared his belief in the power of innovation to create a better tomorrow.
Disney Imagineers are recreating numerous props and details from the original special, including references to “it’s a small world,” the Tower of the Four Winds, and even a prototype Tiki bird. This emotional opening sequence will help set the stage for the attraction’s next evolution.

Disney also confirmed that every scene within Carousel of Progress will be updated to feature entirely new time periods designed to feel more relatable to today’s audiences while still celebrating the attraction’s nostalgic charm.
Carousel of Progress Acts
Act 1 – the 1960s
The first act will transport guests to the summer of 1969, where the Carousel family gathers around the television to witness the historic moon landing. Disney says the moment captures the same sense of wonder and possibility that has always defined the attraction.
Act 2 – the 1980s
The second act jumps ahead to Halloween night in 1985, where Sarah takes center stage while showing off all the latest household gadgets and conveniences of the era. Guests will also see John handing out candy to trick-or-treaters while Uncle Orville once again struggles to find some privacy.
Act 3 – The New Millennium
The third act moves into New Year’s Eve 1999 as the family prepares to welcome the new millennium while navigating the rise of the Internet and changing technology. Disney notes that the scene will blend humor, nostalgia, and recognizable family moments from the era.
Act 4 – The Possible Future
Finally, the attraction will conclude in a brand-new futuristic finale inspired by original concept sketches from Disney Legend John Hench. The updated scene imagines a hopeful future filled with advanced robotics, space travel, and technological innovations seamlessly integrated into everyday life.
Disney also unveiled a first look at a brand-new attraction poster inspired by the original Disneyland artwork, symbolizing the balance between the attraction’s storied history and its evolving future.

To prepare for these updates, Carousel of Progress will temporarily close beginning July 6, 2026, with the refreshed attraction expected to reopen sometime in 2027.

While change has always been part of Carousel of Progress, its heart has remained remarkably consistent since Walt Disney first imagined it decades ago. The attraction continues reminding guests that no matter how much the world evolves, hope, innovation, and family will always guide us toward that great big beautiful tomorrow. And with this ambitious refresh on the horizon, it seems the future of this Disney classic may be brighter than ever.
