Disney and The Super Bowl

January 27, 2014

This coming Sunday, February 2, the biggest football game of the year will be played.  Super Bowl XLVIII will match the AFC Champion Denver Broncos against the NFC Champion Seattle Seahawks for the NFL Championship.  Over recent years, at the end of the game, its become customary for the MVP of the winning team to announce “I’m Going To Disneyland” or “I’m Going to Disney World”.  Disney has had other influences in the years biggest game with different halftime shows and commercials.

This week each day we will take a walk down memory lane and remember some of the games and how Disney was involved in each.

SB 25

On January 27, 1991 the New York Giants defeated the Buffalo Bills 20-19 in Super Bowl XXV.  The game was played at Tampa Stadium in Florida.  New York, employing its ball-control offense, had possession for 40 minutes, 33 seconds, a Super Bowl record. The Bills, who scored 95 points in their previous two playoff games leading to Super Bowl XXV, had the ball for less than eight minutes in the second half and just 19:27 for the game.

The halftime show featured a few things that our TMSM leader Michele loves.  Disney and the New Kids on the Block.  The entire halftime show was produced by Disney and was called “A Small World Salute to 25 Years of the Super Bowl.”  In the show we will see Minnie, Roger Rabbit, Goofy, Chip and Dale and of course Mickey along with other Disney characters.  NFL great Warren Moon and 2,000 local children entertained the crowd.  About midway through the show the New Kids on the Block came out to perform as well.

Unlike in previous years, the halftime show for Super Bowl XXV was not shown live on TV.  It was pre-empted by ABC News in favor of coverage of the ongoing Operation Desert Storm.  The halftime show was presented in an edited format during the post-game show at the conclusion of the game.
