Monsters University still #1, The Lone Ranger rides in this week!

It’s good to be Disney.  For the second week in a row, Monsters University took the top spot at the box office.  The  prequel to the hit Monsters Inc wound up taking in $46.2 million in sales this weekend.  In the number 2 spot, the the comedy “The Heat” and number 3 was “World War Z.”  On a side not, I did see The Heat on Saturday night.  Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy are two of my favorites, so it was a must see for me.  Oh, and if you’re also like me, and are a NKOTB fan, you’d be pleasantly surprised to know that Joe McIntyre has a role in the film.  Just a bonus there, but I digress!

Anyway, Disney/Pixar is doing well at the box office, once again.  Many believed that Monsters University would be a hit, and apparently, this is the case.  Since opening, “Monsters University” has taken in $171 million, according to Hollywood.com Box-Office.  However….. the 4th of July holiday weekend is coming up, and so is another much anticipated Disney Film.  On July 3rd, “The Lone Ranger” rides into theaters.  The box office during the 4th of July always does well, it’s a big time for movie goers.  So, what does this mean for Disney?  Could we be looking at the number ONE and number TWO spot in movie sales come this time next week?  The Lone Ranger will also face stiff competition from the release of “Despicable Me 2,” another film kids have been waiting to see, mine included.

Will The Lone Ranger bump our favorite Monsters out of their leading position?  Maybe so.  Being that The Lone Ranger stars our beloved Johnny Depp, that gives the film some extra help right out of the gate.  There have been a lot of press events for The Lone Ranger, and a lot of marketing in the last few weeks as well.  Regardless of which film does better, it’s still good to be Disney.  It will be interesting to see the numbers next week.  If you check out The Lone Ranger this week, be sure to tell us what you think!
