Nearly 40 years after the original hit theaters, Spaceballs is officially making its return, and we just got our first look at it.

Amazon MGM Studios has released the first poster for Spaceballs: The New One, and it’s a direct nod to one of the original film’s most quotable moments. The image shows two characters raking a giant comb through the sand in the shape of a “2,” a callback to President Skroob’s famous order to “comb the desert” while searching for Princess Vespa. It’s a small detail, but it’s exactly the kind of gag longtime fans have been hoping the sequel would carry over.

Familiar Faces Are Coming Back
A big part of the excitement around this sequel is how many original cast members are returning. Mel Brooks, now 100 years old, is back as both Yogurt and President Skroob. Rick Moranis, who rarely acts these days, is also returning as Dark Helmet, along with Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, and George Wyner reprising their roles.
Joining them is a new group of cast members, including Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman, Josh Gad, and Anthony Carrigan. Gad also co-wrote the script alongside Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit, with Josh Greenbaum directing.

When and Where to See More
Spaceballs: The New One is set for a wide theatrical release on April 23, 2027. Before that, fans will get their first real look at the film during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, scheduled for Friday, July 24, from 4 to 5 p.m. PT in Hall H. That panel is expected to bring the first trailer along with it, so we should have a much clearer picture of the sequel soon.
Can Spaceballs Recapture the Magic?
The original 1987 Spaceballs wasn’t actually a box office hit when it first came out, earning around $38 million on a $22 million budget. It found its audience over time, eventually becoming one of the most beloved comedy cult classics around. That history makes this sequel a bit of a gamble for Amazon MGM Studios, especially with wide theatrical releases for studio comedies being much rarer these days.

Still, there’s reason for optimism. Star Wars remains as culturally relevant as ever, and the original Spaceballs worked because it lovingly poked fun at that very franchise. If the sequel can do the same with where Star Wars and sci-fi storytelling stand today, it has a real shot at connecting with both longtime fans and a new generation of moviegoers.
We’ll be keeping an eye on San Diego Comic-Con for more updates, including that first trailer. Until then, this poster is a fun little reminder that the Spaceballs crew hasn’t lost its sense of humor.
