There are plenty of hardworking cast members who help keep the Disneyland Resort running safely each day, but few can brighten a room quite like Benny. After six years of service as a security K9, the smiling golden retriever has officially hung up his harness and entered retirement — complete with a celebration worthy of a very good boy.

Known for his happy personality, calm demeanor, and unmistakable smile, Benny has spent years helping keep guests and cast members safe. Now, as he approaches nine years old, his working days are behind him, and a new chapter filled with belly rubs, outdoor adventures, and plenty of time with his favorite red rubber ball is beginning.
A Very Good Dog With a Very Important Job
Benny has been part of the Disneyland Resort security team since 2019, serving alongside his K9 handler, Kevin.
“He’s a great dog,” Kevin shared with Disney Parks Blog. “Very friendly, never gets aggressive, never barks at other dogs. Could be a biased opinion, but he’s one of the best dogs.”
Benny is one of a select group of security dogs that work around the Disneyland Resort. According to Disney, the resort currently has 28 security dogs on its roster. Like other cast members, the K9s receive a name tag and ID badge — and when the time comes to retire, dogs like Benny can even receive a special send-off.
Becoming a Disneyland security dog is no easy task. The dogs selected for the role undergo rigorous training at an off-site facility before earning certification and beginning work at The Happiest Place on Earth.
It may be a ruff job, but somebody has to do it.

The Bond Behind the Badge
Kevin’s own Disneyland story began as a security officer before he transitioned into a kennel technician role, caring for the dogs when they were not actively working security shifts.
When an opportunity opened to become a K9 handler, Kevin applied. Benny, whose previous handler had left the company, was available for a new partner.
The two spent time working together while trainers evaluated which handlers and dogs made the strongest teams. The connection between Kevin and Benny quickly became clear.
At one point, the trainer asked which dog each handler would choose if given the opportunity.
Kevin’s answer was simple: Benny.
“This is the one I want,” he recalled.
From there, the two became a team, working in various positions throughout the Disneyland Resort. Their assignments included security areas near the resort entrances, meaning many guests may have passed Benny and Kevin while arriving for a day of Disney fun.
K9 teams work structured shifts that include both on-stage working time and backstage periods for rest and recovery. Because Benny cannot simply tell Kevin when he needs a break, Kevin has always paid close attention to his partner’s behavior and well-being throughout the day.
That partnership grew into something truly special.
The Dog Who Was Always Smiling
For Kevin, working with Benny made even difficult days better.
“He’s always smiling, he’s always happy,” Kevin said. “When he’s in a great mood, he gets you in a great mood.”
Guests noticed it too.
Benny became known for his cheerful expression, often prompting visitors to comment that the golden retriever looked like he was smiling.
“A lot of people come in and are like, ‘Oh, look at that dog, he’s smiling,’” Kevin explained. “He just always brings the room up.”
Despite having a serious job, Benny remained excited, energetic, and focused. Even as he neared nine years old, Kevin said Benny still happily ran around and approached his work with enthusiasm.
He also made Kevin’s job easier by staying focused around distractions. Other dogs, squirrels, horses, and animals rarely pulled Benny’s attention away from his responsibilities.
“He was always on point,” Kevin said.
Kevin jokingly summed up Benny’s personality perfectly: “He lives in his world, and we all exist in it.”

Every Good Boy Deserves a Send-Off
When retirement day finally arrived, Benny received a celebration fit for one of Disneyland’s most beloved four-legged cast members.
Dozens of security cast members stopped by to say goodbye, pose for photos, and celebrate his years of service.
The party also included a major first for Benny: his very first hot dog.

Because working security dogs follow strict diets, Benny had never been treated to one before. Retirement changed that, and after enjoying his first taste, he reportedly wandered around the celebration looking to see if anyone might offer seconds — or perhaps thirds.
But the emotional highlight of the event came during a small retirement ceremony.
Benny performed one final car check, successfully identifying a training substance. After completing the task, he was showered with tennis balls and cheers from the gathered cast members.
Yet even with tennis balls flying everywhere, Benny stayed true to himself. He went for his beloved red chew toy first.
Clearly, Benny knows what he likes.
A New Chapter for Kevin and Benny

While Benny begins retirement, Kevin will soon start training with another security dog who will eventually join the Disneyland K9 roster.
But Kevin and Benny’s story together is far from over.
At the end of Benny’s final shift, he went home with Kevin — not simply as a working partner, but as family.
Kevin already has another dog at home, and he expects the two to become fast friends. Of course, after years of following a working schedule, Benny may need some time to adjust to retirement.
Kevin joked that Benny will probably still wake up at 5 a.m. expecting breakfast and making sure everyone else is awake too.
Retirement will also bring some exciting first-time adventures. Kevin hopes to take Benny hiking and introduce him to the beach — experiences that will give the longtime working dog a chance to explore a whole new world outside his daily security routine.
After six years of helping keep the Disneyland Resort safe, Benny has more than earned his retirement. From his ever-present smile to the joy he brought guests, cast members, and his handler, Benny leaves behind a special legacy that goes far beyond his work in security.
Here’s to long walks, beach days, belly rubs, early breakfasts, and plenty of time with that favorite red ball.
Congratulations on your retirement, Benny. You’re officially off duty — and still a very, very good boy.
