Get ready to feel your heart grow three sizes again. Universal and Imagine Entertainment are officially developing a sequel to 2000’s beloved How the Grinch Stole Christmas, with three key players from the original expected to return. Jim Carrey is in talks to once again transform into the iconic Dr. Seuss villain, with Ron Howard stepping back behind the camera to direct. Howard will produce alongside his longtime Imagine Entertainment partner Brian Grazer.

The new film is already shaping up to have serious comedy pedigree behind the scenes. The untitled sequel has a script from Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel, the trio behind some of Curb Your Enthusiasm’s most memorable seasons. Interestingly, this isn’t their first trip to Seussville either, since the writers previously worked on 2003’s The Cat in the Hat starring Mike Myers.

It’s easy to see why Universal wants to bring this team back together. The original Grinch movie was the top grossing film domestically in 2000, pulling in $260 million in the US and $345 million worldwide, and it even won the Oscar for best makeup. The film has only grown more beloved with time too. It has landed among Nielsen’s top 10 most streamed holiday movies for five years running, and last December it ranked as the second most streamed movie overall during the two weeks surrounding Christmas, trailing only Home Alone.
With Carrey expected back in the green fur and Howard returning to guide the story, this sequel has the makings of a genuine holiday event. There’s no release date or title yet, but with this much talent reuniting, Grinchmas could be coming back in a big way. What do you think this Grinch sequel needs to live up to the original?
