A New Hope for Storytelling: Exploring the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art and the New “Star Wars in Motion” Exhibition. As a lifelong Star Wars fan, there are very few announcements that can get me as excited as the possibility of seeing actual props, vehicles, concept artwork, and costumes from the saga that changed my life. When George Lucas first announced plans for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art years ago, I was intrigued. As more details have emerged, I’ve become convinced that this won’t just be another museum—it may become one of the most important destinations for fans of storytelling, art, comics, film, and yes, Star Wars. With the museum finally opening in September 2026, Lucasfilm has revealed the first details about its inaugural cinema exhibition, and it’s a dream come true for Star Wars fans.
After years of anticipation, construction, delays, and countless updates, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is officially scheduled to open on September 22, 2026, in Los Angeles’ Exposition Park. Founded by George Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson, the museum has been envisioned as a celebration of visual storytelling in all forms—from ancient mythology and classical paintings to comic books, illustrations, photography, and modern cinema.

What many fans may not realize is that while the museum will contain Star Wars artifacts and exhibits, it is not a Star Wars museum.
Instead, the museum’s mission is to showcase how humanity has told stories through images across centuries and cultures. The opening lineup will feature more than 1,200 objects spread across over 30 galleries and exhibitions, exploring everything from fantasy and adventure to family, childhood, heroism, and imagination.
Still, let’s be honest…
For many of us, the Star Wars exhibit is where our eyes immediately went.
Star Wars in Motion
In celebration of May the Fourth, the museum officially announced its inaugural cinema exhibition, “Star Wars in Motion.” The exhibit will focus on one of the most fascinating aspects of the Star Wars universe: movement.
From landspeeders and podracers to starfighters and massive transport vehicles, motion has always been a key part of what made Star Wars feel alive. The exhibition will showcase vehicle designs, props, costumes, concept illustrations, and production pieces from across George Lucas’ first six Star Wars films.
Among the artifacts already confirmed are:
- Luke Skywalker’s iconic Landspeeder from Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope
- The first physical build of General Grievous’ Wheel Bike from Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
- Original vehicle designs and concept artwork
- Costumes and production materials from across the Prequel and Original Trilogies
- Illustrations showcasing the evolution of Star Wars vehicle design

For Star Wars fans, these aren’t simply movie props. They are pieces of cinematic history.
More Than a Museum
One of the things that fascinates me most about this project is George Lucas’ vision behind it.
Lucas has often spoken about storytelling as modern mythology. The museum appears designed around that concept, showing how stories connect humanity regardless of time period, culture, or medium. Visitors will be able to explore artwork ranging from ancient sculptures and Renaissance masterpieces to comic books, magazine illustrations, animation, photography, and cinematic artifacts.

The collection itself is amazing.
Reports indicate the museum houses more than 40,000 works of narrative art, making it one of the largest collections of its kind in the world. Visitors will encounter works from legendary artists such as Norman Rockwell, Frida Kahlo, Jack Kirby, N.C. Wyeth, Charles White, and many others alongside pieces from Lucas’ own archives.
The Building Looks Like It Belongs in Star Wars

Even the museum itself feels like something pulled from science fiction.
Designed by renowned architect Ma Yansong, the futuristic structure resembles a sleek spacecraft rising from the landscape of Los Angeles. The museum sits on an 11-acre campus featuring gardens, walking areas, theaters, educational spaces, restaurants, and community gathering areas.
Honestly, if someone told me it was a new Republic cruiser parked in California, I’d probably believe them.
A Destination Every Fan Should Have on Their Radar
For Disney fans, Star Wars fans, comic book enthusiasts, art lovers, and anyone fascinated by storytelling, the Lucas Museum is shaping up to be one of the most exciting openings of 2026.
While “Star Wars in Motion” will undoubtedly attract visitors from around the world, the museum appears poised to offer something much bigger: a celebration of the stories that shape who we are and how we see the world.
And if that celebration includes standing inches away from Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder?

Even better!
I still remember sitting in front of a television as a kid and falling in love with a galaxy far, far away. Like so many fans, Star Wars sparked my imagination and helped fuel a lifelong love of movies, storytelling, and creativity. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art feels like the culmination of that idea, a place where stories from every culture, medium, and generation come together under one roof. While I can’t wait to see “Star Wars in Motion,” I’m equally excited to explore everything else the museum has to offer. September 22, 2026, can’t get here soon enough.
