REVIEW: The Frozen Wafer Sandwich from the Japan Pavilion is Fantastic!

the Frozen Wafer Sandwich from the Japan Pavilion is Fantastic

A month or two ago, I saw a post about what appeared to be a new ice cream sandwich enclosed in a wafer that was available in the Japan Pavilion at EPCOT. I kept saying, “One of these days, I’m going to try it,” but every time I visited, I either forgot about it or got busy and never made it back there. Finally, I remembered—and wow, am I glad I did!

I knew it was located in the store at the back of the Japan Pavilion, so I made my way to the Mitsukoshi Department Store. I had read that you needed to go to the register and ask for it. While waiting in line, we noticed a small display case with the wrappers, along with some of the other frozen treats available for purchase.

The first decision was which flavor to choose. The options were vanilla, strawberry, and matcha. For me, it was an easy choice—strawberry is one of my favorite ice cream flavors. I did notice that they had offered a sweet potato flavor at one point, but it wasn’t available this time.

When I finally made it to the register, there was a bit of a line, and it seemed like many of the people waiting were there specifically for this frozen snack. I ordered the strawberry wafer sandwich and was ready to see if it lived up to the hype.

Of course, after doing this for as long as we have, I know one thing for sure: you have to take a picture before taking a bite! So before finding out whether this was just another fad or actually worth all the attention, we snapped a couple of photos.

Now let’s talk about the price, because that’s a huge bonus. At just $4.49, this is one of the best values you’ll find for a frozen treat at Walt Disney World.

For comparison:

  • A soft-serve cone at Swirled Showcase costs $6.29.
  • A single scoop at L’Artisan des Glaces in the France Pavilion is $7.95.
  • A small Gelati or Sorbetti at Gelateria Toscana in the Italy Pavilion costs $8.75.
  • Even a classic Mickey Ice Cream Bar will set you back over $6.

Compared to those options, this frozen wafer sandwich is an incredible deal.

Once the photos were taken, it was finally time for the taste test.

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from the wafer. Sometimes frozen waffles or wafers can lose some of their texture and flavor when they’re too cold. And honestly, when something becomes the latest Disney food craze, I don’t always agree with the hype.

This time, however, the hype was absolutely justified.

After the first bite, I immediately understood why everyone was talking about it. The combination of the crispy wafer and the solid frozen strawberry filling was fantastic. The flavors worked perfectly together, and I especially loved that the wafer completely surrounds the frozen dessert. Unlike traditional ice cream sandwiches or bars, there was no melting mess running down my hands in the Florida heat.

By the time I finished it, I had already made up my mind, this is going to be my new go-to snack whenever I’m visiting EPCOT.

Have you tried the Frozen Wafer Sandwich from the Japan Pavilion? If so, let us know in the comments which flavor you chose and whether you thought it lived up to the hype!
