the History of Figment and the Famous Dreamfinder from EpcotThe History of Figment and the Dreamfinder from EPCOT. For generations of Disney fans, few characters represent the spirit of EPCOT quite like Figment and Dreamfinder. While Mickey Mouse may be the face of Disney as a whole, Figment has become the unofficial mascot of EPCOT, loved by fans for his playful personality, boundless imagination, and connection to one of the park’s most cherished attractions.

But where did Figment come from, and who exactly was the mysterious Dreamfinder who guided guests through the wonders of imagination?

The Birth of Journey Into Imagination

Journey into Imagination

When EPCOT Center opened on October 1, 1982, it was unlike any Disney park that had come before it. Walt Disney’s dream of celebrating human achievement, innovation, and creativity came to life through Future World and World Showcase.

One pavilion in particular focused on a concept that was difficult to showcase through traditional exhibits: imagination itself.

Sponsored by Kodak, the Imagination Pavilion opened in 1983 and featured an attraction called Journey Into Imagination. Disney Imagineers needed a way to personify creativity and inspiration, leading to the creation of one of EPCOT‘s most unique original characters.

Meet Dreamfinder

Dreamfinder served as the attraction’s guide and storyteller. Dressed in colorful Victorian-inspired clothing and piloting a whimsical flying machine known as the Dream Catcher, Dreamfinder traveled through the realms of imagination collecting ideas, dreams, music, art, and creativity.

The character was inspired by early concepts developed by legendary Disney Imagineer Tony Baxter and was brought to life origianlly by actor Ron Schneider, who also portrayed Dreamfinder in live appearances throughout EPCOT Center.

Dreamfinder represented the spark of creativity found within every person. His message was simple but powerful: imagination is limitless.

The Creation of Figment

During the attraction, Dreamfinder demonstrated how imagination works by creating a small purple dragon out of random ideas and thoughts.

As Dreamfinder famously explained:

“Two tiny wings, eyes big and yellow, horns of a steer, but a lovable fellow.”

The result was Figment, a playful dragon made entirely from the fragments of imagination.

In fact, Figment’s name comes from the phrase “a figment of your imagination.”

Designed by Disney animator Tony Fucile, Figment featured a distinctive appearance: purple skin, orange horns and a mischievous personality. Unlike many Disney characters, Figment wasn’t adapted from a movie or television show. He was created exclusively for EPCOT, making him one of the park’s few original icons.

A Fan-Favorite Attraction

Journey Into Imagination quickly became one of EPCOT Center’s most beloved attractions.

Guests traveled alongside Dreamfinder and Figment through imaginative worlds filled with music, art, literature, science, and creativity. The attraction featured groundbreaking Audio-Animatronics, elaborate sets, and the unforgettable Sherman Brothers song, “One Little Spark.”

The song’s uplifting message perfectly captured the pavilion’s theme:

“One little spark of inspiration is at the heart of all creation.”

For many guests, the attraction became a defining EPCOT experience and remains one of the most fondly remembered rides in Disney history.

The Controversial Changes

In 1999, Disney significantly reimagined the attraction.

Dreamfinder was removed entirely, while Figment was reduced to a brief cameo appearance.

The changes were met with overwhelming criticism from fans, many of whom felt the heart and soul of the attraction had been lost.

Guest feedback was so strong that Disney eventually revised the attraction again.

Figment Returns

In 2002, Figment returned to a starring role in the updated attraction, now called Journey Into Imagination with Figment.

Although Dreamfinder did not return, Figment once again became the centerpiece of the experience.

The current version of the attraction focuses on the five senses while retaining much of Figment’s playful personality and humor.

While many longtime fans still hope for a full restoration of the original attraction, Figment’s return was celebrated throughout the Disney community.

Figment’s Lasting Legacy

Over four decades after his debut, Figment remains one of the most beloved characters in Disney Parks history.

His popularity has only grown in recent years. Merchandise featuring Figment frequently sells out, the annual EPCOT International Festival of the Arts prominently features the character, and his appearances continue to draw enthusiastic crowds.

In 2022, Figment even appeared in his own Disney comic series and became a featured character in various Disney media projects.

For many fans, Figment represents something larger than a theme park character. He embodies the creative spirit that Walt Disney himself championed throughout his life—the belief that imagination can turn dreams into reality.

One Little Spark Lives On

Although Dreamfinder has been absent from EPCOT for more than two decades, his legacy lives on through Figment and the memories of the original Journey Into Imagination attraction.

Dreamfinder and Figment

Every time guests hear “One Little Spark,” spot Figment merchandise, or ride Journey Into Imagination with Figment, they are reminded of a simple but timeless message: imagination has the power to create anything.

And somewhere, in the hearts of Disney fans everywhere, Dreamfinder is still sailing through the clouds aboard the Dream Catcher, collecting sparks of inspiration and reminding us all to dream a little bigger.

Experience the First-Ever Grand Reunion of the Dreamfinders at House of Mouse Expo 2026

For fans who grew up exploring the wonders of EPCOT’s original Journey Into Imagination, the magic is about to come full circle. House of Mouse Expo 2026 is proud to host the first-ever “Grand Reunion of the Dreamfinders,” bringing together the talented performers who inspired generations of Disney fans through one of EPCOT’s most beloved experiences.

Joining us for this historic reunion will be Ron Schneider, Steve Taylor, and Jeff Breslauer, the remarkable actors who portrayed Dreamfinder between 1982 and 1998. Through their performances, they helped bring imagination to life for millions of guests, guiding them through the Imagination Pavilion alongside Figment, the lovable purple dragon who remains one of EPCOT’s most iconic characters.

Long before character meet-and-greets became a staple of Disney Parks, Dreamfinder and Figment delighted guests throughout the Imagination Gardens and around the famous Leaping Fountains, creating magical memories through photos, autographs, spontaneous interactions, and plenty of imaginative mischief. Their presence embodied the very spirit of EPCOT’s original message—that creativity, curiosity, and imagination can change the world.

Now, for the first time ever, Disney fans will have the opportunity to meet all three Dreamfinders together in one place. Whether you experienced the original attraction firsthand or have come to appreciate its legacy through stories, videos, and Disney history, this reunion promises to be a truly special celebration of one of EPCOT Center’s most treasured eras.

As we celebrate the history of Figment and Dreamfinder, we invite you to join us July 31 through August 2, 2026, at the Wyndham Lake Buena Vista Resort for this unforgettable gathering of imagination, nostalgia, and Disney magic. After all, it only takes one little spark to inspire a lifetime of memories.
