Toy Story 5 Breaks a 31 year Franchise Tradition with Its First ever Pg Rating

Toy Story 5 Breaks a 31-Year Franchise Tradition with Its First-Ever PG Rating. When Pixar released the original Toy Story in 1995, I don’t think anyone could have predicted the impact it would have on animation, storytelling, and generations of moviegoers. Over the past three decades, we’ve laughed, cried, and grown up alongside Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and the rest of Andy’s—and later Bonnie’s—toys. Now, as Toy Story 5 prepares to arrive in theaters, the film is already making headlines for something that has never happened before in the franchise’s history. For the first time ever, a Toy Story movie will carry a PG rating instead of the traditional G rating that has defined the series for 31 years.

According to information released through the Motion Picture Association ratings system, Toy Story 5 has officially been given a PG rating for “thematic elements and rude humor.”

While that may not sound like a major change on the surface, it’s actually a significant milestone for Pixar’s flagship franchise.

A First for the Toy Story Series

Every previous Toy Story film—Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, and Toy Story 4—received a G rating.

That means for more than three decades, the franchise managed to tell emotional, complex stories while still remaining firmly within the General Audience category.

Of course, longtime fans know that some moments in the series have been surprisingly intense.

Many fans still remember Sid’s toy-torturing creations from the original film, while Toy Story 3 delivered one of the most emotional and stressful sequences Pixar has ever created when Woody, Buzz, and the gang faced the incinerator.

In fact, many parents and fans argued that Toy Story 3 felt closer to a PG movie than a G-rated one.

Now, Pixar appears to be officially crossing that threshold.

Why the PG Rating?

Based on what has been revealed so far, the rating appears to stem largely from the film’s themes and its exploration of modern childhood.

The central conflict of Toy Story 5 reportedly revolves around Bonnie becoming increasingly attached to technology, particularly a device known as Lilypad, rather than spending time playing with traditional toys.

It’s a topic that feels incredibly relevant in today’s world.

Many parents have watched children move from toy boxes to tablets, smartphones, gaming systems, and digital entertainment. That struggle between imagination-driven play and technology-driven entertainment appears to be at the heart of the film’s story.

Honestly, that’s exactly the kind of real-world issue Pixar has always excelled at tackling.

The studio has never been afraid to explore big emotions and relatable challenges, whether it was growing up in Toy Story 3, dealing with loss in Up, emotions in Inside Out, or family expectations in Coco.

Jessie Takes Center Stage

One of the most exciting details we’ve learned about Toy Story 5 is that Jessie will reportedly play a much larger role in the story.

Following Woody’s departure at the end of Toy Story 4, Jessie stepped into a leadership role among Bonnie’s toys, with Buzz Lightyear serving alongside her.

Several cast members have hinted that the upcoming film may focus heavily on Jessie’s perspective as she tries to help Bonnie reconnect with imaginative play while navigating the challenges posed by Lilypad and modern technology.

As a longtime fan of Jessie, I’m thrilled to hear she may finally get the spotlight she deserves.

Woody and Buzz Reunite Again

Of course, no Toy Story adventure would feel complete without Woody and Buzz.

Although Woody chose a new path at the conclusion of Toy Story 4, the sheriff is expected to reunite with his old friends when the toys find themselves facing their latest challenge.

The return of Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear gives fans another chance to spend time with two of animation’s most iconic characters.

And let’s be honest—hearing those voices together again is going to hit a lot of us right in the childhood.

Andrew Stanton Takes the Helm

Another interesting change behind the scenes is the film’s creative leadership.

Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton is directing Toy Story 5. Stanton has been involved with the franchise from the very beginning and helped write several previous Toy Story films. He’s also the creative force behind beloved Pixar classics such as Finding Nemo and WALL-E.

That alone should give fans confidence that the story is in very capable hands.

The Future of Toy Story

Whenever a new Toy Story movie is announced, the same question inevitably comes up:

Do we really need another one?

The truth is, people asked that before Toy Story 2, Toy Story 3, and Toy Story 4 as well.

And somehow Pixar found meaningful stories to tell every single time.

The idea of exploring how toys fit into a world increasingly dominated by screens, apps, and artificial intelligence feels like a natural evolution for the franchise. After all, Toy Story has always reflected childhood as it exists in the real world.

The toys may be animated, but the emotions have always been very real.

With Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the gang preparing for another adventure, it looks like Pixar is once again asking an important question: what happens when the world changes faster than the toys can keep up?

We’ll find out when Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.

As someone who has watched these characters since the beginning, it’s hard to believe we’re about to experience a fifth Toy Story movie. The franchise has always found ways to evolve alongside its audience, and this latest chapter appears to be doing exactly that. While the PG rating may be grabbing headlines today, I suspect the real story will be how Pixar tackles the relationship between childhood, imagination, and technology in a world that looks very different than it did when Woody first met Buzz Lightyear back in 1995. If Pixar’s track record is any indication, we should probably bring some tissues to the theater once again.
