A Story Set in the Shadows of the Empire
Maul – Shadow Lord takes place roughly a year after the events of The Clone Wars, during the early reign of the Galactic Empire.
The series follows Maul as he attempts to rebuild his criminal empire after the collapse of the Republic and the chaos brought on by Order 66. Operating from the shadows, Maul begins constructing a new syndicate on the mysterious planet Janix, a world that has remained largely untouched by the Empire’s growing influence.
But Maul isn’t just looking for power—he’s searching for something more dangerous.
A key element of the story revolves around a young Jedi Padawan survivor of Order 66, Devon Izara, who finds herself on the run in a galaxy that has turned against the Jedi. Maul sees potential in her—and possibly the opportunity to train a new apprentice to help carry out his long-burning desire for revenge.
The Return of a Legendary Voice
Fans of the animated Star Wars series will be happy to hear that Sam Witwer is returning once again to voice Maul. Witwer previously portrayed the character in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, and even contributed to Maul’s brief appearance in Solo: A Star Wars Story.
Over the years, Witwer’s portrayal has helped transform Maul from a mostly silent villain in The Phantom Menace into one of the franchise’s most layered and tragic characters.
A Darker Tone for the Star Wars Universe
Based on the newly released trailer, Shadow Lord appears to lean heavily into a darker, crime-driven tone. Neon-lit cities, criminal underworld politics, and Maul’s relentless pursuit of power suggest a series that explores the grittier side of the galaxy far, far away.
The animation style also looks like an evolution of the Clone Wars aesthetic—stylized and cinematic, while still maintaining the signature look fans have come to love.
The series will consist of 10 episodes, released two at a time each week leading up to the finale on May 4.
