BREAKING: Coming Soon to Walt Disney World, Piston Peak National Park. Cars from around the country are fueling up to be the wildest racer in the “wheelderness.” Of course, we know that fans are curious to see how the exciting new backdrop for the big rally race will fit into the waters, landscapes, and storytelling at Magic Kingdom.
Today, we’re thrilled to announce that Piston Peak National Park will keep the amazing storytelling tradition alive that has been a part of Liberty Square and Frontierland since day one.
Westward Ho! Crossing into New Frontiers at Magic Kingdom
From the very beginning of Magic Kingdom, thrill-seeking visitors have journeyed through space and time as they move from Liberty Square to Frontierland. They start off with architectural styles inspired by upstate New York and colonial America in Liberty Square, then head to a super fun concert in the North Woods, swing by New Orleans at Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and wrap things up in the Arizona bluffs at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
At the core of all these tales are brave characters who have faith in themselves, paving the way to their dreams. To keep this journey alive in the rich tradition of American storytelling, Piston Peak National Park will be included in the biggest expansion ever seen in Magic Kingdom.
Welcome to Piston Peak National Park
Picture a stunning wilderness brimming with towering trees, snow-covered mountains, stunning waterfalls, thundering rivers, and remarkable geysers. Although it’s fictional, Piston Peak draws inspiration from the Rocky Mountain region and the rich history and famous landmarks of the American Frontier and its national parks.
At Piston Peak, visitors can check out the visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, trails, and more, all nestled in the Disney and Pixar “Cars” universe. To ensure these buildings blend seamlessly with the stunning landscapes around them, Imagineers are employing a type of architecture known as “Parkitecture,” which was created by the National Park Service to design structures that complement the natural surroundings.
On the outside, trees will act as a natural shield between the off-road rally and the rest of Frontierland and Liberty Square. Majestic mountains with striking peaks will sit beside a serene waterway opposite Grizzly Hall, while the impressive geysers from the well-known Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will reach into the paths of our off-road rally.
Cruising Just Around the Bend
As summer kicks into high gear, starting July 7, the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat will be closed. Meanwhile, Imagineers are busy beyond Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, creating the first-ever land themed around Disney Villains, featuring two major attractions, dining options, and shopping, all on a wonderfully twisted grand scale.
But that’s not everything going on at the Magic Kingdom. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is set to reopen next year with some fresh magic, and later this summer, Disney Starlight will light up the streets of Magic Kingdom with its big debut on July 20, while The Beak and Barrel will be ready to welcome pirates of all ages.
