Lugi’s Tires Closing. New Ride Coming To California Adventure in 2016!

February 6, 2015

Tires

For several months now rumors have swirled about Lugi’s Tires in Carsland closing or being modified. Today the Disney Parks Blog announced that the planned lengthy refurbishment for the Tires that Disneyland had been publishing in their last few refurb updates will not be occurring. Instead the ride will close at the end of the operating day on 2/16/15.  It seems they are then “sending Luigi on a vacation to Italy to visit his family.”  Come early 2016 a new ride will reopen at Casa della Tires. An opening date and information on this ride other than it will ” bring even more four-wheeled fun” and “feature a new ride system and ride vehicles”  have not been released.

For those that haven’t experienced Lugi’s Tires this great ride is based on Disneyland’s Flying Saucers attraction from the 1960’s. The way the ride works is once riders sitting securely in their ride tire, the bottom of the tire inflates and air pumps under in the ground would give the tire some lift. Riders then use their body weight (team work!)  to move the tires across the smooth surface. Originally when the ride opened riders were able to throw inflated beach balls around the ride area creating a fun atmosphere, but those were removed about two months after the ride opened for various reasons.

  1. The Flying Saucers were a flop and closed shortly after opening. I don’t understand why WDI thought the concept would be any better with a Cars theme. Maybe they should have tried Frozen…
