Return movie poster
Today, May 25th marks the 30th anniversary of Revenge of the Jedi’s release.  Well maybe I should say Return of the Jedi.  I’m sure that is what more people are familiar with.  Up till 2 months before the release the 3rd installment in the Star Wars Franchise (Episode VI) was named Revenge of the Jedi.  Many fans though thought that a Jedi would not seek revenge so the title was changed.  See the original trailer shown in theaters below:

Return of the Jedi is still one of the highest grossing films of all time.  In the 1983 film we were introduced to such characters at Jabba the Hutt, the Ewoks and Admiral Ackbar.  Sadly we also lose the Jedi Master Yoda.  I’m sure everyone knows the story by now.  This was the last of the trilogy and fans never knew if we would see anymore.  The way the movie ends with Darth Vader / Anakin Skywalker bringing balance to the force by destroying the Emperor.  The Rebels feeling that they have finally defeated the Imperial forces.  The Ewoks cheering and singing and worshiping their leader C-3PO.  Before the credits role we see Yoda, Obi-Wan and Anakin in their Ghostly images.

When George Lucas decided to do the 3 films he did them so the story would be complete if needed.  He would never have to show what happened before or after.  I don’t think he ever dreamed that his story would become the epic it did.  Star Wars changed movies forever.  The special effects, the catch phrases and the iconic characters, Star Wars will forever live on through the fans and its position in pop culture.

Since Disney purchased the franchise from Lucas we now know that  we are going to be getting more movies, more from the Star Wars Galaxy, more merchandising.  As a life long Star Wars fan i’m excited to see what is in store for the future of the franchise.

May the Force be with you
