As a local we are always looking for fun new adventures at Walt Disney World.  Things that are off the beaten path.  When we stay on Staycations at Walt Disney World, we focus on things outside of the parks.  Things that we don’t usually do and on our past visit to Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground we found a hidden gem that quickly became our families new favorite thing to do.

Did you know you can canoe at Walt Disney World?  We didn’t know this until we stayed at Fort Wilderness and we were so excited to try it.  Well I lie, at first I was very tentative to do it, but my husband convinced me that I could do it so we took the leap.   There were 5 of us and we had to split up between two canoes which meant I would have to control it with the assist of one of my younger kids.  At first I was worried that I wouldn’t know how to row and we would be stranded in the water, but to my surprise and a few hiccups along the way, my daughter and I figured it out pretty quickly and absolutely loved it.

It was one of the most peaceful activities I’ve ever been on.  You can see so much wildlife while paddling through the water.  We saw a ton of birds, turtles, and even a small alligator.

We enjoyed canoeing so much that we ended up doing it multiple times while staying at Fort Wilderness.

Canoes can be rented at the Bike Barn and the cost is $8.50 for 30 minutes and $13.00 for an hour.  The cost is by the canoe, not by the person making it a very inexpensive outing for our family. We found it took us about 45 minutes to get around the lake and the staff was very friendly and helpful.

So if you are looking for a fun family friendly activity that is different from your normal Walt Disney World adventures, definitely check out canoeing at Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground.
