10 Things to LOVE about Disney Cruises

Since we are embarking on our first TMSM Fan Cruise next September, I thought this would be helpful!

When we booked our Disney cruise, I have to admit I was a little skeptical. We are experts at the parks, but this was outside of our wheelhouse (forgive the pun). We had never been on a cruise before and honestly didn’t know what to expect. Would we have fun? Would we get seasick? Is there enough to do? Will it have the same magic as the parks? Too many questions to list, but trust me, they were constantly swirling around in my head. As the time to cruise drew closer, I was nervous, but hopeful. Once we boarded the ship, all doubt left my mind, and I immediately fell in love. Being on a cruise is an experience like no other, and being on a Disney cruise is beyond that. Here are the top 10 things I loved about our cruise experience.

  1. Sunsets – Being out on the open sea makes for some once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunities. I’ve seen some gorgeous sunsets over the water before, but none like I saw on the ship. I could honestly have taken thousands of pictures of the sun going down over the water. It would be a photographers dream! From the upper decks of the ship or even from a stateroom veranda, the views could not be beat.
  2. Cast Members – So. Many. Cast Members! The second you step foot in the port terminal, you know it’s Disney. The Cast Members, from housekeeping to waitstaff to security were extremely attentive the entire time we on the ship. They were always there, willing to assist in any way, with a smile. You can’t put an empty glass on the table without someone quickly swooping by to pick it up, and oftentimes, a refill closely followed. When arriving at dinner, our favorite beverages were already on the table waiting for us.  Turning in for the night, we were greeted with turned down beds, a towel animal and chocolates, and our Navigator for the next day. Everyone that we spoke with was kind and willing to share their story and experience. They helped make our cruise. There aren’t enough good words to describe the Cast Members on the ship.
  3. Shows/Entertainment – While onboard, you will have the opportunity to see some of the best shows and possibly get a sneak peek at a movie that hasn’t been released in the theaters yet. While we didn’t see a movie, we did go to one comedy show and one of the stage shows, and let me tell you, they are Broadway quality shows. With theater-style seating, there isn’t a bad view in the house. We did sit up front and my son got picked to be a part of the ventriloquist show, which was really funny and a moment he will never forget and I will always cherish!
  4. Character Interaction – Character interaction on the ship is like no other. It’s not uncommon to see Mickey and the gang strolling on the decks on their way to a stage show or meet and greet. One plus about cruising is that you get the opportunity to see the characters in different attire. They have at least 3-4 different outfits that I saw while on the ship. Plus, there are characters that don’t normally have meet and greets available on the ship. While you always get the Fab 5 (Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, Donald, Goofy), you also get Stitch, Daisy Duck, Chip & Dale, Captain Hook & Mr. Smee, Captain Jack Sparrow, and the princesses (may vary based on cruise). My son was lucky enough to be selected to participate in the deck dance party where they had a hula hoop and limbo contest with the characters. He had a blast and I enjoyed watching him have so much fun!
  5. Excursions – There are too many to choose from! We decided to stay onboard for our Nassau to have the opportunity to explore the ship and take advantage of the smaller crowd. At Castaway Cay, we did the Stingray Adventure, and that was an experience none of us will ever forget. If you ever have the opportunity to go to Castaway Cay, I highly recommend trying this adventure. It was worth every penny! I’ve heard a lot of good things about the brewery tour in Nassau and the day at Atlantis, so those may be on the agenda for our next cruise adventure.
  6. Onboard Activities – Where to begin with this one! Let’s just say there is something for everybody, and plenty of it! When we got our Navigator each night, we had a difficult time narrowing down what we wanted to do the next day. There are SO many things to do! So much so that we couldn’t fit it all in and had to choose between activities. There were other times that we split up and did our own thing. I went to a cooking demonstration (yes, you get to sample the deliciousness) while my husband and son took a few trips on the Aquaduck.
  7. Oceaneers Club – Oh to be a kid again! Especially a kid on a Disney cruise! My son asked…no begged, to go to the kid’s club. There are so many activities, games, crafts, and just overall fun. Who doesn’t want to fly the Millennium Falcon or play in Andy’s room? I certainly do! The Cast Members in the kid’s club are all about safety, cleanliness, and fun and it shows! There were times we had to drag my son out so we could go to dinner! We’d get the ‘why are you here’ look because he was having so much fun and didn’t want to leave!
  8. Merchandise – While some Disney Cruise Line merchandise is available through the Disney store, there is some merchandise that is exclusive to the Disney Cruise Line and only available on the ship. From chocolate to toys, ornaments to shirts, and pins to purses, there is something for everyone and some of the best Disney merchandise I’ve seen.
  9. Food – I don’t know how or where to start with this one. The food. Oh, the glorious food. The meals on the ship were some of the best meals I have had EVER. The amount of food available as well as the variety made dining extremely easy for all palates, tastes, and dietary restrictions. We experienced it all! The buffets had so much and so many types of food. The sit down dinners had a great variety on the menu and the desserts were spectacular. Be prepared to be well fed while on a cruise. The best part….meals are included (exclusive of adult only dining)!
    1. Fun – SO. MUCH. FUN! The onboard activities, shows, performances, characters, food, and all of the above created such memories of a fun, fantastic time that we will always cherish. Your cheeks will hurt from smiling so much.

This is only 10 things to love about Disney cruises, but there are so many more that I could list and so many more pictures I could share. I can’t wait to book our next cruise! If you have doubts like I did about going on a cruise, forget about them and book your cruise today! I promise it will be a decision you won’t regret!
